How to Handle a Water Damage

Winterville, NC - April 25th, 2013Water damage is a common occurrence in many home and in most cases cannot be prevented. You may not even notice the water damage until it becomes so bad that it's leaking through your roof, starting to flood the basement or is causing stains in your ceiling. If you are currently dealing with water damage of any kind, it is important to handle the situation quickly and effectively before it gets any worse or completely out of hand. Typically, handling the damage yourself is fairly simply and can be completed in just a few hours.

Finding the Water Damage
First, you will need to determine where you're having water damage in your home. This could be on the floors, ceiling or nearby any surface area. It is then necessary to find exactly where the water is coming from. This could be due to a leaky pipe, broken appliance or simply from a hole in the roof. If the water is coming from a pipe or appliance, be sure to turn off the main water line that can usually be found either outside or in the basement. This will stop the water in its tracks, allowing you to assess the damage with ease.

Insurance Company
If the water damage is very bad, it is important to call your homeowners insurance company for assistance. In most cases, the damage needs to be reported within 24 hours of it occurring to qualify for assistance or claim policies. A 24-hour contact number should be available for all insurance companies so that you can alert them of this incident whenever it occurs.

Taking Care of the Damage
To take care of the water damage, first move any valuables and furniture to a clean, dry area of your home. Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the standing water if it is not too deep to do so. If carpet is drenched, you may need to cut it up in order to replace it so that mold does not grow beneath the surface. If walls and insulation have been affected, cut out and remove all pieces to prevent mold from growing. Be sure to call a home repair company after removing the water.
